Community Band
Founded in 1959, the Pottsgrove Community Band began with a vision from Tom Roberts, director of the Pottsgrove High School Band. He wanted to create an opportunity for his students to continue playing their instruments long after high school. That summer, his dream became a reality as former high school band members joined with adult musicians from the community to form what would become the Pottsgrove Community Band.
In its earliest years, the band met only during the summer and presented a concert at the end of the season. As membership grew and more adult musicians joined, the band developed into a true community organization, expanding rehearsals and performances throughout the year.
Over time, the band’s concert season grew to include a spring concert as well as outdoor performances across the three Pottsgrove townships. The first park concert was held at Sanatoga Park, where a beautiful bandshell was added a few years later. The band has also performed at Ringing Rocks Park and throughout Lower, Upper, and West Pottsgrove.
The Pottsgrove Community Band is proud to serve as a community outreach organization, sharing music at nursing homes, assisted living centers, retirement communities, parks, and recreation facilities throughout the area.
Throughout its long history, the band has had only a few dedicated directors: Tom Roberts, Rodney Boyer, John Meko, and Bruce Roberts, who continued his father’s legacy through 2025. In 2026, longtime Assistant Director Jann Huggens stepped into the role of director, continuing the band’s tradition of musical excellence and community connection.
Today, the Pottsgrove Community Band includes musicians of all ages and backgrounds. Members range from teenagers to adults in their eighties, all united by a love of music and community. The band rehearses once a week throughout the year and currently has more than 65 active members.
The band is proudly sponsored and supported by the Pottsgrove Recreation Board, which includes representatives from the three Pottsgrove townships and the Pottsgrove School Board.
