In 1959, Tom Roberts, director of the Pottsgrove High School Band, had a vision, a dream to form an organization where all his high school band members could continue to play their instruments throughout adulthood. During that summer, the Pottsgrove Community Band, was started, using the high school band members as a nucleus and inviting adult members from the community to also participate.
During the first several years the band met only during the summer months, and a concert was given at the end of the summer. As more adults joined the band, it became more of a community band and rehearsals were now throughout the year.
Soon, a spring concert opened each concert season, followed by outdoor concerts in the three Pottsgrove townships. The first concert in the park was held at Sanatoga Park. A beautiful band shell was added to the park a few years later. Other concerts were held at Ringing Rocks Park, and the townships of Lower, Upper and West Pottsgrove.
The band is a community outreach organization and performs at nursing homes, assisted living centers, retirement communities, and park and recreation facilities throughout the area.
In the bands’ 62 years, the band has only had four directors, Tom Roberts, Rodney Boyer, John Meko and now following in his father’s footsteps; Bruce Roberts.
The band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life, and of all ages. The youngest players are in their teens, and the oldest in their eighties. We rehearse one day a week throughout the year. At present we have over 65 active members who enjoy bringing music to our community.
The band is sponsored and supported by the Pottsgrove Recreation Board, comprised of members from the three Pottsgrove townships, and the Pottsgrove School Board.
